Louisiana Supreme Court Hosts Conference Focused on Trauma-Sensitive Support for Children

ALEXANDRIA, La. — The Louisiana Supreme Court is bringing judges, educators and community partners together this week for a statewide conference focused on improving how Louisiana responds to children and families experiencing trauma and instability.

The “Building a Trauma-Sensitive State” conference begins Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Alexandria and continues through Oct. 2. The event is organized through the court’s Families in Need of Services Assistance Program, or FINS-AP. Press Release Trauma-Sensitive …

The conference will focus on recognizing the issues that may be behind a child’s behavior rather than addressing behavior alone. Organizers say trauma and instability can affect school attendance, family relationships and a child’s ability to succeed at home and in the classroom. Press Release Trauma-Sensitive …

Participants will learn strategies aimed at helping families receive support earlier, potentially preventing problems from escalating to the point that formal court intervention is necessary.

Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John L. Weimer said the state’s previous work addressing issues such as truancy has shown the value of working directly with at-risk families before they become more deeply involved in the judicial system. Press Release Trauma-Sensitive …

Conference sessions will address trauma-informed communication, de-escalation, case management, youth involvement and support for children with disabilities or developmental differences. Participants will also work on practical solutions to challenges including transportation barriers, family instability, learning needs and lack of support. Press Release Trauma-Sensitive …

A major focus of the conference will be collaboration among courts, schools, community organizations and other services that work with children and families. Participants will develop 90-day action steps designed to address challenges in their own communities. Press Release Trauma-Sensitive …

The conference is part of the Louisiana Supreme Court’s broader effort to strengthen the informal FINS process, which uses early intervention to connect families with services before issues require more formal court involvement.

General — N-Club Hall of Fame gymnastics coach Armando Vega passes away at 90

NATCHITOCHES – Services are pending for Northwestern State N-Club Hall of Famer Armando Vega, who passed away at age 90.

Vega, who died in Dallas, Texas, led Northwestern to its first NCAA team championship when his gymnastics team captured both the NAIA and NCAA Division II titles in 1970.

A six-time NCAA champion at Penn State and a member of the 1956 U.S. Olympic Team and an alternate in 1964, Vega’s career at Northwestern began in 1968 as he extended –  and built upon – the Demons’ successful gymnastics run.

After leading Northwestern to a successful defense of its Mid-South and NAIA championships in 1968, Vega guided John Elias to the NAIA and NCAA Division II individual national championships with Elias becoming the first athlete to accomplish the feat.

In addition to the 1970 NAIA and Division II titles, Paul Tickenoff won the all-around individual championship under Vega’s tutelage.

Vega was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1970 and followed that by leading the Demons to a sixth straight NAIA championship in 1971. His 1971 team won all five meets in which they competed.

Vega capped his Northwestern career in 1972 by leading an undermanned Demon squad to an NAIA national runner-up finish.

Vega, a native of Hurley, New Mexico, then went to LSU where he produced nine teams that earned top-10 NCAA finishes and earned back-to-back NCAA Gymnastics Coach of the Year honors in 1977 and 1978.

Vega was inducted into the United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1977 and was honored with a 2007 selection to the N-Club Hall of Fame.
